CONCERNING the statement by Mr J Kenyon (Letters, May 15) that Belgium, France, Holland and other European countries should display the Union Flag on their motor vehicle registration plates so as "to remind them of who got them out of the mire in the last war when they folded up like a pack of cards in a matter of weeks."

Surely, if the memory of my O-Level history classes serves me well, he meant that these countries as well as our own should be displaying the flag of the United States, without whose assistance we would all have folded.
