MAIDENS bowled over by the chance to represent Bury in a county-wide competition next month have been learning the basics of batting and bowling.

Girls from across the borough took part in a special taster event at Castle Leisure Centre, with organisers selecting a team of schoolgirls to take part in the Greater Manchester Youth Games.

Demonstrators showed them a variety of skills after extending an open invitation to all would-be female cricketers under the age of 15.

Team manager Alan Peacock said: "They were very enthusiastic. Because it was a new thing for some of them they found it quite difficult at first but when they got used to the body motions they really enjoyed it."

For the competition, to be held in Wigan next month, more members are still needed for the team.
