SO St Helens Central Station is to receive a £16,000 revamp. Why, when Newton-le-Willows and Earlestown Stations have been neglected for many years, despite that it might be claimed otherwise.
Yes, some work has been done at Earlestown, a few trees planted, fences erected, a wall. But no real facilities beneficial for passengers against inclement weather.
No toilets or full facilities for wheelchair users, with the exception of Number 1 and 5 platforms. This means that to travel to Liverpool these invalid wheelchair owners have first to travel to Warrington Bank Quay or Manchester Victoria, returning via Earlestown, their original commencing station.
The buildings on Platform Number 2 of Earlestown Station are in a deplorable state of repair and seriously neglected. This is despite it being a listed building and under a Preservation Order.
These are complaints voiced by me on a number of occasions when I was a delegate to the Passenger Advisory Committee in the St Helens area and still it seems they are being ignored.
G. H. Woods, Newton-le-Willows.
