MILLIONS of animal lovers joined TV star Rolf Harris to share in a family's sorrow and joy after pet terrier Charlie underwent amputation.

Tyldesley gran Rose Wallbank and her Staffordshire Bull Terrier appeared on the popular TV show Animal Hospital after Charlie was badly injured escaping from the Common Lane home Rose shares with her son Eddie, his partner Debbie and their two children.

After reporting Charlie's disappearance to police, Rose discovered a dog warden had found Charlie with a badly injured leg. She rushed her canine pal to the RSPCA clinic in Salford where, unknown to her, the hit series was being filmed.

Rose was asked by the film crew for permission to film Charlie's treatment and, although reluctant at first, she was quickly advised that if she agreed the vet would see Charlie immediately.

Rose said: "I was heartbroken when I was given two choices -- have Charlie put down or have his leg amputated. I was so upset but after discussing it with my family we agreed Charlie should be given a chance as he is only two years old. He had the operation and the following day we were allowed to bring him home. I was so upset, I couldn't speak but Charlie was running around happily in no time."

She added: "All the film crew for Animal Hospital were absolutely lovely. Rolf Harris was a kind and genuine man. He did everything he could to reassure me and put me at ease."

Since the operation the film crew have visited Rose. She said: "The crew came to my house to see how Charlie is getting on. I am so glad of my decision now, although I was worried at first.

"It's nine weeks since the operation and they have been nine good weeks. He has been out wrestling with bits of tree and has enjoyed the recent warm weather."
