LYTHAM residents are supporting plans to sell off a local landmark.

King Edward VII and Queen Mary school governors want to sell the Queen Mary building to pay for development at the King Edward site, where all 600 pupils will be housed from September 2003.

And school principal Julian Wilde said many locals support the idea. "It is a very exciting time for us. I have had letters and telephone calls from those expressing support for the governors' ideas," he said.

The governors announced last month that they were on the verge of talks with Fylde Borough Council about the site's future. If the Queen Mary building is sold off its faade will be maintained, they said.

Mr Wilde added: "It gives us the opportunity to provide the very best facilities in the area for our pupils and at the same time to tidy up some of our less attractive buildings.
