GOLBORNE carnival passed off peacefully, thanks to an increased police presence.

Extra officers were drafted in after a violent brawl erupted at last year's carnival - a family favourite for more than half a century.

Police chiefs said this year's highly successful showpiece event was not marred by violence.

Chief Inspector Ken Dixon, second in command of Leigh police, told the Journal there had been no arrests and no reports of any trouble.

As reported in the Journal, police said last May's event was soured by brawling locals and fairground workers.

Pensioners Billy Edwards, 68, and his brother Tommy, 76, vowed to steer clear of Golborne after suffering injuries in the violent clashes.

Fairground operators even had to be escorted out of town by police.

Sub-divisional police operations unit manager Inspector Bill Dyke added: "Golborne carnival is organised for families to enjoy the day and have fun. Last year the day was spoiled for everyone by a few idiots who couldn't control their behaviour.

"Additional police resources were allocated to this year's event and their intention is to deal positively with any incidents of disorder. "
