AT 103 Ada Hilton is today the toast of Journal-land . . . and she shares her birthday with another local VIP -- your own Very Important Paper -- the Leigh, Tyldesley and Atherton Journal.

Avid reader Ada enjoys singing our praises and she's always on top note, having been a chorister for the best part of a century. There are 102 years separating Ada's first breath in a Victorian world and the Journal's Friday edition launch at the dawn of a new millennium. But both have a flair for life and an everlasting quality.

The former millworker, who was born in Tyldesley but spent 69 of her years living in Atherton, enjoys music, reading and conversation. Independent Ada lives at Alderwood Residential Rest Home at Boothstown where assistant manager Ray Clarke praised their oldest resident.

On the eve of the big day he said: "Ada is marvellous. She is a very private and active lady and very indepedent. She enjoys Sunday visits to her son's home. She's very well travelled and embarked on a trip to Norway when she was 90. We will have a big cake and all the residents and staff plus Ada's family and friends will join in wishing her all the best."

Entertainer Dave Turton will make sure the party goes with a swing and songbird Ada won't need any prompting to accompany him singing old time favourites.

Many happy returns, Ada! BIRTHDAY GIRL: 103-year-old Ada Hilton
