THE Liberal Democrats' North West Battlebus stopped off in St Helens on Friday as part of its tour of more than 50 different constituencies in the region.
And the party's candidate for St Helens South, Councillor Brian Spencer, was there to greet chairman of the North West Liberal Democrats, Neil Derbyshire, and MPs when the bus pulled in to Church Square bidding to boost their General Election campaign in the town.
A 53-year-old former miner who has lived in St Helens all his life, Brian sees his familiarity with the town and its people as a key element of his bid to overturn Labour's massive majority in St Helens South at the last election.
Brian, who worked at Sutton Manor Colliery for 29 years up to its closure in 1991, told the Star: " I have lived and worked in St Helens all my life. I know the people and believe I can represent them. I am a local man who knows the local problems.
"I will focus on improving education, hospitals, and jobs -- St Helens needs more jobs".
Brian is Liberal Democrat ward councillor for Sutton and Bold. He currently works as a training advisor for unemployed people at Training Network North West Ltd.
