OUT OF WORK: Unemployment levels in Bury were showing no signs of easing. The total of people out of work was 1,355 comprising 922 men and 363 women.

ANOTHER CLOSE SHAVE: Hilda Wilkinson of Beech Street, Summerseat, walked away with the "Lovely Legs" title during a Pontins Holiday in Suffolk. Her prize was a Lady Remington de-luxe shaver. Mrs Wilkinson was aged 72!

WRESTLING FANS: Delayed concussion robbed Bury's Andrew Jones of an almost certain British title at the National Junior Wrestling Championships in Glasgow. After easing his way to the 49-kilo class final in impressive style, defending champion Andrew of Richard Birch Street was ruled unfit to continue by the tournament doctor after taking a knock in an earlier bout. It was not until the final that the injury became apparent. DEMONIC BULLDOZER: A runaway bulldozer left a trail of destruction in Ainsworth Road, Bury, before tearing down a garden wall and smashing into the end house of a terrace. Residents were getting ready for bed when a "thunderclap" rocked their homes as the bulldozer crashed into the gable end of the block. A passing motorists stopped the bulldozer which had been started up by children.

PINBALL WIZARDS: Three Bury College students were conditionally discharged and ordered to pay £5 court costs each after admitting to dishonestly causing electricity to be used.

The trio played their common room pinball machine for 45 minutes without paying for the game, Bury magistrates were told. They had found a method of modifying the machine by connecting two wires.
