RIGHT up our street!

That's the borough's German twin town of Schorndorf which has been chosen for the name of a square in Bury.

The area outside Marks and Spencer in the Mill Gate centre has now been named "Schorndorf Square" in recognition of the friendship links estabisbed between the towns.

The unveiling ceremony of the new sign took place at the Mill Gate centre on Saturday (May 25).

Two signs, both bearing Schorndorf's coat of arms, will be given a permanent home in the square.

The event coincided with a visit by a 20-strong party from Germany.

The honour reciprocates a gesture by Schorndorf officials who three years ago named an area of their town after Bury.

At Saturday's ceremony, Bury Metro Community Twinning Association chairman Mrs Joyce Johnson said: "This truly reflects the place that Schorndorf has in our hearts and that friendship will continue to grow."

Mrs Johnson, who is also deputy mayoress, said that Bury and Schorndorf established friendship links in 1990 before a formal twinning arrangement was sealed six years ago.

Mr Peter Erdmann, deputy mayor of Schorndorf, welcomed the naming and said those using the square would be given a permanent reminder of the twinning link.

And he told the gathering: "I want to thank you all for your warm friendship."
