A GENERAL election is almost upon us and I live in the key constituency of Bury South. Yet Prestwich, Whitefield and Radcliffe are quickly becoming slum areas and ghost towns.

What have our local councillors or our MP done to improve this situation? Nothing.

In 1998 local residents got together to prevent the council from selling Whitefield Park for redevelopment. "People Power" won the day. Now, three years later, what has become of our efforts?

The area we fought for has been turned in to a tip or landfill site, evidently with the council's full knowledge, as they are the ones with the keys to the park gates!

It is all well and good for Ivan Lewis to push his propaganda through our letter boxes, telling us about individuals he has helped (half a dozen cases in his time in office doesn't seem anything to write home about). Mr Lewis should know what a slum shopping centre we have here in Whitefield and how our area is being run down by this Labour council.

I really hope that this election the people of Whitefield vote with their heads instead of their hearts. Then we may again have a town to be proud of.
