ROADS surrounding farms with recently confirmed cases of foot and mouth were expected to remain closed today for the mass culling of animals.

Motorists are being warned by police to avoid the A682 Barrowford to Gisburn Road, which continues up towards Paythorne, after the latest case of the disease was confirmed at a farm on the outskirts of Gisburn.

The road was closed off during the night, but officers said it was likely to remain so for another 24 hours.

Gisburn Road at Bolton by Bowland, from the junction of Hellifield Road to the junction of Carters Lane, has also been closed, along with Hellifield Road -- from the centre of Bolton by Bowland -- to the junction of Carters Lane.

These closures have resulted in the closure of Stump Cross Lane.

Inspector Steve Baines, Lancashire Constabulary force incident manager, said: "Certain roads have been closed due to the increase of foot and mouth cases in the area.

"They are likely to remain closed for the rest of the day due to the anticipated culling and removal of carcasses."
