SOME salient points were made by L Lawes (Letters, May 22), about the commitment and usefulness of local councillors. Two years ago, before the local elections, our Wensley Fold councillors put leaflets through our doors advising us of their monthly surgery at the Bank Top Centre, urging us to use it.

Two months later, post-election, I therefore went there armed with my dossier of information about an issue of concern in the ward. I waited for the duration of the scheduled surgery, but none of our three esteemed councillors could be bothered to turn up, while the efforts of an embarrassed receptionist to contact them proved unsuccessful. Enough said!

No doubt they will be expecting me to turn up at the polling booth on June 7. Quite apart from my obvious desire to exercise my democratic right, could they tell me why I should bother?

And if I do, bearing in mind some of the decisions of the council in recent years, can I be assured that the will and voice of the local electorate will actually be implemented?

A DINEEN (Mr), Buncer Lane, Blackburn.
