A CANCER survivor is to run an inspirational lap of honour at a Cancer Research Campaign, three years after doctors said he didn't have long to live.

John Smith, of Longridge Road, Preston, will be one of several cancer survivors running the lap at Preston Sports Arena, in Cottam, during the Relay for Life campaign on July 13-14.

The former corporate treasurer of Leyland Daf will join Leyland cancer survivor Tom Bidwell -- featured in the Citizen three weeks ago -- along with other sufferers of the disease.

John, 64, was diagnosed with inoperable prostrate cancer three years ago and had to endure extensive radiography treatment.

But, doctors held out little hope that the keen caravaner and DIY enthusiast would make a full recovery. "I asked the doctor how long I had to live and he just shrugged his shoulders," John said.

"It was an awful moment. From being a high flier in business, I became someone suffering panic attacks and stress.

"Cancer is a hard thing to come to terms with and people can and do feel alone."

To help other people in the same boat John formed his own men's cancer support group, run from Vine House, in Cromwell Road, Preston.

The 14-strong DIY enthusiasts produce wooden bird tables and other items for sale with proceeds going to Vine House.

Cancer Research Campaign fund-raiser Maureen McCluckie is appealing for more team entries to the field event which aims to raise awareness and cash for the cancer-caring good cause.

Cancer survivors or team entrants should call Maureen, John or Lesley on 0161-722-5555.
