Double trouble for Clarets girls.

Burnley FC Girls 2 Bury Girls 3 Burnley's hopes of achieving an historic 'double double' were destroyed by the left boot of Charlotte Higginson.

For while Hannah Bailey grabbed two first half goals it was Higginson's superb long range free kick that ultimately put the game beyond Burnley.

It was sweet revenge for Bury who lost out in a dramatic Cup final at the County Ground in Leyland back in March.

On that day, Bury also held a 3-1 lead only to lose 4-3.

Again they got the perfect start when Bailey capitalised on a defensive mix-up to put Bury ahead.

But it seemed only a matter of time before Burnley drew level with the exceptional Lisa Thompson and the powerful Karen Boyle running the Bury defence ragged.

Thompson was denied twice by Bury keeper Katie Perry while Boyle thudded a shot against the bar.

But Thompson levelled the league decider when she raced onto a through pass, nodded it over the advancing Perry and bundled the ball over the line.

Burnley should then have taken a lead into the break as they dominated the remainder of the half.

Boyle hit the post again as Burnley poured forward but they were hit with a sucker punch as Bailey swivelled on the edge of the box to fire into the roof of the net.

Sarah Halsall had a chance to equalise just before the break but fired over when well placed.

Higginson then got the vital third goal when she curled home an unstoppable free kick.

Again Burnley pushed forward and Thompson was denied a goal by Katie Perry.

However, Thompson then set up Boyle for a deserved goal when she held her nerve to slot the ball under the keeper.

Boyle then showed a clean pair of heels to her marker and was denied a great solo goal by the legs of Perry.

And it proved not to be Burnley's day when Boyle hit the bar for the third time after good work from Danielle Cooper and Stephanie Meeks.
