UNIQUE photographs, books, and letters belonging to the "real" Alice in Wonderland from East Lancashire have raised more than £2 million at auction.
After marrying Jonathon Hargreaves, the son of wealthy a mill owner, at 28, Alice Liddell lived at Oak Hill Mansion in Accrington.
But is was when she was seven that Alice, during a 'golden afternoon' on a river expedition with Lewis Carroll and her two sisters, became the inspiration for perhaps the best-loved children's story in English literature.
It was on that day, July 4 in 1862, that Carroll, whose real name was Charles Dodgson, first told his story of Alice's Adventures Under Ground.
Alice, who died in 1934, carefully preserved the items relating to her fictional namesake, which were sold on behalf of the Alice Family Trust for a total of £2,008,275.
