LANCASTER City Council has responded to calls for a ban on smoking at the city's bus station by imposing a "No Smoking" policy at the Damside Street building.
The ban was supported by members of the council's Finance and Corporate Policy Committee who met last week. Signs informing bus users that the station is a no smoking zone will be erected by the end of the week.
The smoking ban at the bus station is in line with the council's policy in its public buildings.
Leader of the Independent group, Cllr Tricia Heath, said: "Seven out of 10 people do not smoke and naturally people are increasingly insisting on a healthy environment and clean air. Lancaster City Council supports this policy.
"Having listened to several bus users' concerns arising from people smoking in the building the council has acted promptly to implement the ban which will be beneficial to all."
