CAN I suggest that the battalion of armoured police officers who recently stormed the Warehouse Nightclub regroup to launch an attack on a far more strategic target in their war against drugs.

Intelligence reports suggest that thousands of young people will be gathering close to the city at the end of June to take part in eight all-night raves.

Sources have revealed that vast quantities of drugs will be consumed at these gatherings. In fact, it's very likely that thousands of orders are currently being placed with friends of friends to purchase illicit substances such as cannabis, ecstasy, amphetamine and cocaine.

If the police raid these all-night parties they are guaranteed to recover a huge "quantity" of class A, B and C drugs and make hundreds of arrests under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

To help the police I can even give them the exact address. It's Lancaster University, Bailrigg, Lancaster.

Will the police act on information received? Will they dress up like Darth Vader and raid end-of-term parties on campus?

Will the police burst in on the student revellers, wreck the DJ stand, knock glasses out their hands, prod them like cattle, shout at them to put their hands on their heads, strip search suspects, hold them against their will for two hours and force them to give details into a surveillance camera?

Will the headlines read: "Future captains of industry arrested in dawn drugs swoop."

Go on Mr Policeman, if you are truly serious about making arrests for drug offences, why not check out the end of term parties where drugs will be freely available (as they have been since the 60s) then arrest the vice-chancellor for allowing it to go on on campus.

I suspect the police are not truly serious about drugs, they know they can't arrest the millions of people in this country who regularly break the drugs laws, but they can be "seen" to be doing something by staging a very public raid on an easy target - the city's smallest nightclub.

Very convenient, I'm sure some high ranking officer now has a very nice pie chart to show his boss.
