BURNING material which fell from an open fire started a blaze at a house in Coniston Road on the Newton estate. The fire in the rear downstairs room ignited an armchair and there was also a fire in the flue of the chimney. On arrival two firemen entered the building to fight the blaze and a ladder was used to deal with the chimney fire. A spokesman for the fire brigade said: "Luckily the occupants discovered the fire in its early stages and it didn't have time to spread. We would advise people to make sure there is nothing stored by open fires, that chimneys are swept regularly and that they have a fire guard in place. There should also be a smoke alarm fitted and, for advice call the station on 60193."
