BURNLEY midfielder Paul Weller today warned his team-mates that the honeymoon period is over as he prepares for the harsh realities of First Division football next season.

Clarets boss Stan Ternent did a magnificent job last term in steering the Turf Moor club to seventh place in their first season back in Division One.

But player of the year Weller has warned the club could be in for a rougher ride this time if Ternent can't strike it lucky in the transfer market over the summer.

"Next season will be tough, because there are a lot of good sides out there," said Weller.

"The fans will be expecting a lot more, but hopefully the gaffer will bring in a few new signings to maintain our push up the league.

"I think everyone is expecting us to be in the top six, but there's no doubt that it will be a tough season, there are a lot of big clubs and strong teams in the division."

With newly-promoted Millwall and recently-relegated Manchester City both likely to mount a strong challenge, the pressure is on the Clarets to go one better than last season.

And Weller admits the scramble for a play-off place could be tougher than ever, despite seeing the back of big-spenders like Fulham and Blackburn.

"I think with the teams coming up and, especially with the teams coming down from the Premiership, it could be even more difficult," said Weller.

"Last year, I think a lot of clubs didn't know what to expect from Burnley, but now they know what we are about, and that will apply to the likes of Millwall, Bradford and Walsall.

"We will, hopefully, increase the size of the squad, and that will create a bit of competition for places, because we all need a little kick up the back side, and someone to keep us on our toes.

"I enjoyed playing in central midfield, I played there for nine or ten games this season, but, to be honest, I don't mind where I play as long as I am in the team.

"I will enjoy playing anywhere.

"But I just can't wait for the season to start now."
