FIREFIGHTERS today praised the life-saving actions of a mother after a fire broke out in her bedroom.
The woman was at home in Kay Street, Darwen, with her two children when the fire broke out about 7.20pm yesterday.
Officers arrived to find the woman waiting in the back yard with her two children after evacuating the house and closing the bedroom door.
It is believed the blaze started after a discarded cigarette fell from an ash tray on to an envelope.
Sub-officer Phil Whittaker said: "The woman did all the right things. She closed the bedroom door and got the children out into the back yard until we arrived.
"It was only a smouldering fire and there was only slight smoke damage to the carpet and cabinets nearby but it could have been a lot worse if the flames had got hold of the bedding.
"It was started after a discarded cigarette fell from an ashtray onto an envelope. The house did have a fire alarm but there were no batteries in it."
