A PRIMARY school head teacher has been suspended while investigations are carried out into exam irregularities at his school.

Peel Brow Primary School, in Ramsbottom, recently won praise from Ofsted inspectors who said the head Michael Duce provided "very good leadership".

But the school is refusing to comment today on his absence, diverting all calls to Bury's education department.

It is understood Mr Duce has been ordered to stay away from the 246-pupil school after governors contacted the local authority expressing concerns over the administration of the Standard Assessment Tests.

Under Mr Duce's leadership the school opted out of state education and became grant maintained.

It now has "foundation status" -- being partly independent and partly under local authority control.

A spokesman for Bury Council education department said: "Mr Duce has been suspended and we have no further comment to make."
