HEALTH chiefs are warning that poisoning your family could be as simple as forgetting to wash your hands thoroughly.
National Food Safety Week starts on Monday and with the arrival of warmer weather it's an ideal time to warn of the dangers of poor hygiene while preparing food.
Everyone, including children, should be aware of the importance of clean hands before eating and cooks particularly should realise that poor hygiene can result in cross-contamination of food.
Angela Towers, regional food and health development officer for the NHS Executive North West, said: "Our hands are one of the main ways in which harmful micro-organisms can be transmitted to food and to preparation surfaces in the kitchen. Thorough and frequent handwashing can prevent cross-contamination."
The British Meat Information Service is also stating how important it is to maintain good hygiene during food preparation and make sure all meat is cooked properly.
You should:
make sure frozen food is defrosted thoroughly and remember not to refreeze once thawed;
remember to wash your hands and utensils in between handling raw and cooked meats;
before serving, always check meats are cooked thoroughly all the way through (juices should run clear).
