RECRUITS are needed to ensure that offenders locked in police cells are being properly cared for.

Greater Manchester Police Authority wants members of the public to act as its eyes and ears to monitor the treatment of people in detention centres.

The recruitment drive follows new guidance from the Home Office to ensure the smooth running of the Independent Custody Visiting schemes (ICVs) which allows members of the public to visit detainees in police cells and check on their welfare. Custody visiting provides the police authority and community with an independent view of the detention of individuals.

All new ICVs and existing lay visitors will receive comprehensive training and support from the police authority.

On appointment, volunteers will complete a probationary period during which further training will be given.
