IMMACULATE finger nails will be the last thing on charity champion Janet Jones's mind as she treks through the mountains of Peru.

But the charity fund-raiser is offering backers the chance of manicures, pedicures, facials and cuts and blow-dries as she prepares for her mammoth journey along the Inca trail to boost the lives of deprived children by providing them with youth hostel holidays.

Tomorrow and on weekdays next week, former Leigh College health and beauty student Janet will be at Leigh's Asda superstore, from noon-4pm, where would-be sponsors can find out how they can support "The Give Us A Break" charity. At the same time, they can have a lucky dip chance to win treatment vouchers or 'pamper days' at Wigan and Leigh College Image Centre.

Janet's mum, Rose, of Marlbrook Drive, Daisy Hill, is helping promote the trek across the Andes for which Janet has to raise £2,700. She is taking part in September's Peru Inca Trail Trek to raise funds for the Youth Hostel Association development scheme and activity holidays for children from deprived backgrounds.

Mother-of-three Janet is no stranger to adventure, her last challenge being the Brighton to London bike ride.

Of her South American trek, she said: "I am looking forward to it. My children are absolutely petrified because they know I will be going through a jungle and are convinced I will fall off the edge of a mountain."

Anyone who would like to sponsor Janet and help needy youngsters -- and give themselves the chance of free beauty treatment -- can contact her mother on 01942 816917. See her tomorrow in Leigh or Monday-Friday at Sainsbury's Leigh or take a lucky dip with students at The Image Centre at Coniston Street, Leigh throughout the week. PICTURE: Colin Lyne
