BURNLEY boss Stan Ternent says money doesn't necessarily breed success -- but may cast an envious glance at the amounts some of the First Division clubs have to spend this season.

Portsmouth manager Graham Rix is thought to have a £12m kitty thanks to chairman Milan Mandaric who doesn't want them to face a last game battle against relegation like last season.

And Wolves boss Dave Jones is thought to have around £10m to spend -- and is said to be casting his eye over £3m Sunderland midfielder Alex Rae -- while relegated Bradford have a £7.5m budget.

While this is money the Burnley boss may only dream about, he's again confident that his side can compete with the 'money men' as they showed last season.

"I feel like a pauper when you hear about that," he laughed.

"Everyone would like a lot of money to spend but you can't always get it.

"But money doesn't necessarily breed success. Several clubs have shown that.

"I haven't got it so I don't think much about it."

The Clarets boss does have some money to spend -- boosted by the sale of a club record of more than 10,000 season tickets, the new television deal which is said to bring in around £2m and the success of various commercial ventures such as the Clarets Foundation.

But balancing the books and good management has always been the Turf Moor philosophy -- with Ternent being careful with any money at his disposal. The Clarets boss said he was 'waiting on a couple of calls' and says he does expect a number of new faces at the club come July -- but would not reveal any names.

"I have around three to four players who I am interested in signing although this could change and I may bring more in.

"The addition of extra players should strengthen the squad.

"We finished seventh last season, that was a fantastic achievement and the players themselves want to and expect to be in the top half of the league again next season.

"That's our starting point and that's what we have got to achieve whether we have got money or not.

"I am waiting on a couple of calls although June is a quiet month with players keeping their options open and a lot of managers are away.

"But by the time pre-season commences in July we will have our squad in place."

There is no news yet on striker Gareth Taylor who went on holiday this week.

Ternent had said securing a deal with the Manchester City front man was a priority and is involved in talks with the 28-year-old's agent.

But the Burnley boss admitted: "There is nothing to report as yet."

Clarets target Peter Crouch has been the subject of a £1.5m bid from Portsmouth.

But Queens Park Rangers have reportedly turned down the bid for the 6ft 6" striker.
