NOMINATIONS are now being sought for this year's Bury Woman of the Year.

Now in its fourth year, the fund-raising event has not only celebrated the achievements of the women of the borough but also raised a staggering £18,000 plus for Bury Hospice.

Winners of the prestigious title have come from all backgrounds reflecting the diversity of the borough.

Mrs Margaret Robinson, event co-ordinator, said: "We want women from all sections of Bury's community to be nominated for the award.

"We are looking for women from all walks of life who go over and beyond the call of duty. In previous years we have had women from the voluntary sector and the professional sector. This year, we would very much like to attract women from the rich cultural backgrounds that play a large part in the borough." Mrs Lily Reid was first to hold the title of Bury Woman of the Year back in 1998. Mrs Reid from Bond Street, Bury, was given the accolade in recognition her work with local charities, particularly mental organisations and her efforts to raise awareness about mental health issues in Bury.

The following year the honour was awarded to Judith Taylor of Kenmore Avenue, Elton, who was rewarded for her work with disabled people in Bury. Mrs Taylor was diagnosed as "spastic diaplegic" when she was only 18-months-old.

Present holder of the prestigious title is business woman Carol Godby, who established the successful Carol Godby Theatre Workshop. The award acknowledged her tireless work with children.

Nominees must live or work in Bury, Prestwich, Whitefield, Ramsbottom or Tottington. They must have given their all to whatever work they do, whether paid, voluntary and must have contributed something back into the community.

All nominees must be over the age of 18.

The winner of the award will be chosen by an independent panel of judges and announced at the Women of Bury luncheon. Nominations were be short-listed, and those on the list will be invited to the special lunch at the Elizabethan Suite on October 25, which will be fronted by a guest speaker.

Bury Woman of the Year is being sponsored by the Bury Times, Bury College and Bury Council's Contract Services.

"Bury Woman of the Year is a very special event for the borough's women. It acknowledges their achievements and the work they put into the community. But at the same time it is a fund-raiser for Bury Hospice," said Mrs Robinson.
