ORGANISERS of Darwen Lions Gala have abandoned plans for a sheep dog display because of the foot and mouth crisis.

The talented canines have been replaced by Bill Heslop, of Baxenden, who will perform his one man and his dog routine with ducks and geese!

The showman, who has appeared on television on Animal Hospital roadshows is just one of the attractions at the 22nd annual gala at Blacksnape playing fields, Roman Road, on Sunday.

Fun will get under way at 11am with a mini cross country run for under 11s and continuing long into the afternoon.

Thre will be slapstick shows from zany decorators Dizzy and Dazzy, gymnastic displays from Darwen Leisure Centre team and local vocal duo The Ladybirds.

Kiddies will also love puppet shows and walk-abouts from the lifelike Pixton Puppets.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service will be on hand, along with the Army, with an aerial ropeway, mini assault course, weapons displays and air rifle galleries.

The Territorials will also have a mini hospital display, alongside a medical services exhibition by Lions International.

Crowds will be able to browse around an array of trade and charity stalls, enjoy the fun of a fairground and fly kites, as well as enjoy refreshment in the beer tent. A grand draw is offering a holiday as its main prize.

Once again this year free buses will run from the town centre to the show ground.

Lions' past president Ian Ashton said: "The gala is a great free day out for all the family and we are expecting a great turn-out for the biggest day of our year to raise money for local charities.

"Under the present critical situation we could not have brought sheep on to the show field, but I am sure the new attraction will prove very entertaining.

"Bill has never put on a show with geese before -- anything could happen."
