WHEN Peter Williams won a trophy at Gaghills Bowling Club in Waterfoot he accepted it with pride -- because it was the one he donated in memory of his late wife.

Peter, 63, is a retired Merchant Navy seaman and his late wife Agnes used to travel everywhere with him.

When he retired six years ago the couple joined Gaghills Bowling Club and when Agnes died four years ago Peter donated a trophy in her memory.

He has spent the last three years trying to win it and now he can proudly display the Members' Handicap salver at his home in Newchurch Road, Stacksteads,.

He said: "I have been trying to win it. I even got into the final one year but then was beaten.

"This time I was determined to win and when I was playing I was thinking I am doing this for Agnes. In the final I beat Des Barnes."

Peter bowls in the Rossendale League with Gaghills, in the Burnley League for the White Hart and in the Rochdale league for Edgeside.
