AN avid collector of miners' tags is appealing for tokens from pits in the Leigh area.

West Midlander Peter Wall is seeking to boost his tally of brass embossed colliery lamp checks.

The discs - bearing the pits' name and number - were drawn by the miner with his lamp, before going down the shaft.

Peter said: "I am trying hard to obtain some lamp checks from former pits in the Leigh, Tyldesley and Atherton areas, including Bedford, Astley Green, Chanters, Cleworth Hall, Nook, Sandhole, Gibfield, Howe Bridge and Mosley Common.

"Most of the collieries were once owned by Manchester Collieries Ltd and the Wigan Coal Corporation.

"I would very much like to bear from anyone who once worked at and can remember these collieries working and any help they can give me in trying to obtain any lamp checks from them would be very much appreciate."
