CHANGES to concessionary passes and permits mean more Leigh people will be able to travel cheaply on the buses from this month.

Following the implementation of the Transport Act 2000, new groups of people who can apply include the partially sighted or those unlikely to get a driving licence on medical grounds.

In addition, the criteria has been widened for people with walking difficulties and the deaf.

All applicants must be permanently resident in Greater Manchester, and the partially sighted or profoundly deaf will need to have their application form authorised by their local council's social services department.

Arrangements will be made for a medical assessment of those applicants with serious walking difficulties and those unable to obtain certificates from social services sensory teams.

A helpline is available on 0161 228 7811. Application forms will be available at local authority information centres and social services, travelshops and by post from GMPTE.
