A LEIGH-based housing society is playing a key role in the renovation of eyesore homes.
The County Palatine Housing Corporation is using Housing Corporation cash to buy and renovate derelict properties across Leigh and Wigan. Together with council chiefs, they are winning the war against run-down houses.
Four years ago, five per cent of the borough's 90,000 privately owned homes were lying empty.
Now the figure stands at three per cent - and council chiefs have received high praise for the decrease.
They were voted to have the country's 'most innovative partnership' by the national Empty Homes Agency.
Council chiefs have forged partnerships with County Palatine Housing Society and Robin Park Development to conduct refurbishment.
Deputy mayor Coun Geoff Roberts said: "This is a good start but we know there are still too many empty homes in the borough and we will continue the good work."
Residents worried about private homes which have been empty for more than six months should contact the council's Urban Renewal Service on 01942 733348.
