NEIGHBOURHOOD Watch leaders are preparing for the launch of a new scheme which will make the household fridge the latest tool for the emergency services.

The Datalink scheme involves people writing down their important details on a recognised form, placing it inside a waterproof carton and stashing it among the foodstuffs, and carrying a card which lets people know just where they can get details of the cardholder.

It will be stored in the fridge as this is likely to be the last place affected by a fire. Anyone can apply to join the scheme.

The project will be unveiled during National Neighbourhood Watch Week on June 18.

Details such as medication, allergies, disabilities and responsibilities, such as whether they have to pick the children up from school, will all be included on the form so the relevant authorities can get all the information they need.

Blackburn's Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator Albert Caville said: "This a fantastic idea and one which should really help in making life easier for the emergency services."

John Taylor, a spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue, said: "The potential for it to save lives is obvious.

"We are very keen to get it promoted and are working with other partners to make sure it is a success."

A spokesman for Lancashire Ambulance added: "The more information we have quickly can help us a lot in determining what course of action to take with a patient."

The scheme will be launched at the Asda store at the Clayton Green Centre, Clayton-le-Woods, Chorley, at 2.30pm on Monday, June 18.
