RESIDENTS are calling for action on a road they claim is a death trap.

John Walsh, 37, of Buncer Lane, Blackburn, and wife Janet say there are too many cars parked on the road, causing obstructions to fast-moving traffic.

The couple have contacted neighbours about the problem and asked them to park their cars either in driveways or garages.

John said: "We have been round to lots of our neighbours' houses and they all seem to avoid us. All we are trying to do is prevent a serious accident."

Graham Cowley, assistant director of technical services said: "We have received a written letter of complaint from Mr Walsh, which arrived at the office yesterday.

"We will look into his comments and see if there are any traffic management issues to address. We thank Mr Walsh for bringing his concerns to our attention and we will be back in touch with him in due course.

"This is the first complaint we have had of this problem in this area." But the couple are not only concerned about speeding motorists and obstructions, they are also worried about cyclists.

John added: "I have nearly been knocked down several times, and I once had a near miss with a cyclist who was zooming down the road. I couldn't hear the bike coming so when I stepped out into the road and got the shock of my life." John added: "All the road needs is double yellow lines to make the residents park on their driveways"

Sergeant Stuart Isherwood, of Blackburn Police's road unit, said: "We have had problems in the past with collisions in Buncer Lane, although there have been traffic calming measures put in place to help slow down traffic.

"Islands have been put in the road to stop overtaking. Where there are calming measures there are usually crossing facilities, so overall there isn't a problem in Buncer Lane."
