THE roads are full of unwelcome markings and speeding and camera signs, yet towns themselves are not very well signposted.

Only recently, on a trip to Southport, I struggled to find the lovely village of Churchtown, and my hairdresser this week told me she and a friend went shopping in Blackpool and decided to lunch in St Anne's but couldn't locate it.

The worst case of getting lost I can remember is when I was small. We set off on a family Sunday drive to Rivington Pike, but ended up playing cricket on a field in the centre of Halifax - and that was in the days before motorways.

Can anyone beat that?
