TODMORDEN town councillors are set to give a big vote of support for the town's market as Calderdale officers seek wide ranging views about its future.

Todmorden amenities committee are to discuss their support for the market, and have asked for an extension of the Calderdale deadline of June 20 for their reply.

In welcoming the next step, Councillor Joe Rez said Todmorden had an excellent track record, and made a "huge profit" on its market.

This was confirmed when officers carried out a "best value of markets" review report which showed that Todmorden market hall made an annual profit of £6,700, while the open market's profit was an annual £83,000.

This fared much better than Hebden Bridge, Elland and Sowerby Bridge markets, where heavy losses were confirmed, while those in Wakefield, York, Bury and Barnsley fared even worse.

In seeking further views, Calderdale officer Martin Brockie says: "Further research is now under way into other types of market operations, comments on the options and views about the future direction of the local market.

"Overall, the standard of the service was found to be good and it compares favourably with other local authority markets.

They are profitable and generate almost half a million pounds a year that is used to help provide priority services.

"While not all markets produce a surplus, and some are subsidised, they still contribute to the community in terms of attracting visitors and supporting the local economy."

Mr Brockie says the consultations have demonstrated strong support from the public, the business section and traders, adding that markets were overall seen as an asset and were valued in the community.
