COLNE professional Marcus North thinks his side could be capable of clinching the double this season -- providing they build on their current run of form.

It was a stop-start season for the Horsfield side until last weekend when a double win -- over holders Todmorden in the Worsley Cup and then over rivals Burnley in the Transco Lancashire League -- looks to have got them on a roll.

And they are aiming to continue the winning streak when they welcome Nelson to the Horsfield tomorrow.

"We are mid-table and I think it is because we have been struggling to get some consistency," said the 21-year-old, who back home plays for Western Australia.

"We have beaten the likes of Haslingden and East Lancs but struggled against teams lower down that perhaps we should be beating.

"But last weekend was a good weekend and we need to continue to build on that.

"A few wins and we could be in third or fourth place and then who knows?"

The all-rounder is having his best spell in his first season at the club since moving from Gateshead Fell in the North East Premier League.

An unbeaten half-century and three wickets last Saturday took Colne through to the semi-finals of the Worsley Cup where they will face Ramsbottom at Acre Bottom on June 24. "That was good. Colne were runners-up in the Worsley Cup in 1998 and then won it in 1999 so they have had a recent taste of cup success and I'm sure they want it again," he said. "I have learnt since I have been here what a massive Cup it is and it would be fantastic to get to a final.

"It is a great feeling to get to the last two in any competition in any league."

And on Sunday, Colne won the praise of Burnley pro Dale Benkenstein who was impressed by their team-work to record a five wicket win over their Turf Moor rivals.

"I think we do have good amateurs here and I am enjoying my cricket," said North.

"When I can get 41, someone else knocks over 50 and then two chip in with scores in the 30's, it shows the strength of the amateurs at Colne.

"We have a good amateur base here, as do the other clubs, and it is a very competitive league with a lot of good quality players. That is why I think the league title is wide open.

"East Lancs are strong and Todmorden are many people's favourites for the title but they had a disappointing weekend last weekend.

"These things will happen in this league and so the title is up for grabs."

SUNDAY'S GAMES: Burnley v Lowerhouse, Church v Rishton, East Lancs v Todmorden, Enfield v Accrington, Ramsbottom v Bacup, Rawtenstall v Haslingden.
