A 21-YEAR-OLD Longridge man authorised himself to cash someone else's Giro at the town post office.

Blackburn magistrates heard that staff initially refused to cash the Giro but when Phillip MacPherson returned later with a letter he claimed was from the payee they handed over £74.

MacPherson, 21, of Bowland Close, pleaded guilty to obtaining property by deception and two charges of failing to answer bail.

He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £74 compensation and £65 costs for the deception offence and fined a total of £50 for the bail act offences.

Eddie Harrison, prosecuting, said the letter of authorisation had been concocted by MacPherson who claimed to have found the giro.
