A WOMAN motorist from St Helens has died after suffering severe head and chest injuries in a motorway crash on the M61 in Anderton on Sunday.
BMW driver Julie Marie Locke, aged 30, of Liverpool Road, Pewsall, was taken to Preston Royal Hospital but died last night.
Mrs Locke suffered severe head and chest injuries after her BMW 318 car veered off the northbound carriageway and was in collision with a Honda Civic car before smashing into trees.
Mrs Locke was airlifted to the Royal Preston Hospital for emergency treatment.
A traffic police officer was on the scene within a minute of the crash at 6.45pm on Sunday and managed to cut the injured woman free from her seat belt.
It took paramedics and firefighters more than an hour to free her from the wreckage.
