A NEW blitz on stolen cars is to go on display in Todmorden as police show off the high-tech campaign to the public.
The automatic number plate recognition system was first unveiled at Calderdale police headquarters by the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire, Graham Moore, and will now be shown to motorists in Todmorden at the Safeway Store in Rochdale Road tomorrow.
The system, the first of its kind in the area, is believed to be much more efficient than existing systems. The video camera and laptop computer will be carried in mobile patrols and will monitor passing vehicles. It is hoped the new system will cut car crime by 25 per cent.
The software is being tested by Calderdale vehicle crime reduction action team in the latest stage of a two year target campaign by West Yorkshire police.
