PEOPLE who leave a key in the inside of doors at home run the risk of being burgled.

The warning by police follows a spate of key-turning burglaries in the Pennine Division which includes all of Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale areas.

Crime prevention officer Dave Sykes said: "Thieves and burglars know many ways to turn keys that have been left in the back of the door from the outside.

"The easy way to prevent it is never to leave your keys in the door in the first place."

Police are urging residents to do their bit to beat the burglar but ensuring doors and windows are secured and that keys are not left in locks.

PC Sykes said: "We now have a special pro-active investigation team dedicated to reducing the number of burglaries and in recent weeks we have arrested a number of people on suspicion of committing burglary related offences.

"It is in everyone's interest, especially the home owner's, to ensure that these sort of crimes are not committed in the first place."

PC Sykes advised there were a number of simple steps that residents could take to reduce the risk of becoming prey to thieves.

He said: "First and foremost I would urge them that doors and windows are secured when they leave their properties even if it is only to go in the back garden in nice weather.

"Don't be tempted to leave a window open, that simply gives thieves an open invitation. And, if you have an alarm, use it."

PC Sykes added: "It's all about making life as difficult as possible for thieves by taking simple precautionary measures.

"We would also encourage people who witness crimes or who see anyone acting suspiciously to contact local police on 01282 425001 or call Crimestoppers free on 0800 555111."
