ANIMAL lovers from the St Helens Lost and Found Pets Register are appealing for funds to open an animal sanctuary.
The group, which rescues sick and stray animals, has earmarked a possible site for the sanctuary, but need financial backing from to take their plan forward.
Debbie Baxendale, who has run the organisation voluntarily for four years, said the current 24-hour service was placing a strain on resources.
She said: "We are desperate for an animal sanctuary in St Helens as the nearest available one is in Leigh. I am appealing to local people, businesses, farmers and the council for help.
"Everything comes down to money and we need donations desperately - either land or money."
