YOUTH groups and schools across Wyre need to hurry if they want to register for this year's Blake Shield competition.

Supported by Professor David Bellamy, the competition aims to reward those who recognise the importance of being environmentally aware.

There are four categories -- the Anglican Otter Award for 5 to 7 year olds, the Ward Cup for the 7 to 11 age groups, the Shield for 11 to 14 and 14 to 16 year olds and the Hosking Youth Award for the 16 to 19 age group.

But entrants must get their skates on, as the closing date is Saturday, June 30.

Groups can focus on plants, insects, birds or other animals. Entrants need to provide reports that record their activities, observations made and new things learned. Photographs, pictures, paintings and short videos may also be incorporated.

Mark MacGregor, countryside manager, said: "The Blake Shield competition aims to generate awareness of the living and breathing world around us and about the wildlife with which we share our planet."
