BURNLEY may welcome British record signing Juan Sebastien Veron to Turf Moor after lining up a prestigious friendly with Premiership champions Manchester United.

The Clarets, who also face top-flight opposition in Everton and Chelsea during their run-up to the new campaign, will take on United at Turf Moor on Tuesday, August 14.

Burnley kick-off their First Division campaign two days earlier at Hillsborough, but United don't begin the defence of their title until the following weekend against Fulham.

Sir Alex Fergsuon has therefore pencilled in a final work-out for his some of his first-team squad, although most of the champions' biggest names will be away on international duty.

England, Ireland, Holland, France and Norway have international games the following night which will rule the likes of David Beckham, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and Ruud Van Nistelroy out of the game at Burnley.

However, Argentinian international Veron, who United were today hoping to sign from Lazio for £23 million, may be given a run-out, alongside the likes of Dwight Yorke, Ryan Giggs and emerging talents Luke Chadwick and Ronnie Wallwork.

Burnley's assistant manager Sam Ellis said: "The Premier League season does not start until August 18 and Manchester United wanted to play a match against strong opposition.

"We are delighted to host the champions, but I must stress that they will be fielding a team which does not include their international players.

"Even so, it should be a great occasion for the Burnley public."
