AFTER two cancelled weeks following foot and mouth restrictions, the Thursday Evening Time Trials promoted by the Pendle Forest Cycling Club were back on schedule with an 11-mile hilly circuit based on Thornton-in-Craven.

Fastest was in-form Jonathan Boothman, who lives almost on the course at Barnoldswick, riding for the promoting club who clocked a time of 27mins 10secs which was over two minutes faster than second placed Simon Phillips and Steve Singleton in third.

This evening the club promote a 10-mile event and then there will be a two week break for local holidays.

The Midweek Rossendale Road Club 9.4 mile time trial at Accrington was won by Blackburn and District CTC member Dave Edwards in 22mins 34secs. Second was Rossendale's Peter Agnew (23.56), Paul Warrener was third (23.59) and Jim Ashworth fourth in 25.25.

The North Lancashire Road Club 10-mile event at Edisford also included the Rossendale Road Club riders, who had their planned Circuit of Bowland time-trial cancelled following foot and mouth restrictions.

Fraser Snape, of Read, and of the promoting North Lancs Road Club was fastest overall in 23.40 and he was followed home by Guy Laycock, of Wiswell, in 24.05.

Third in the regular event was Blackburn's Dave Hargreaves with 24.52 and Ken Holden, of Accrington, was fourth in 25.40.

In the Rossendale Championship, Blackburn-based member Bill Rodgers was winner in 24.30, Simon Bartram of Todmorden was second in 25.21, Paul Warrener third in 25.48 and Jim Ashworth fourth in 26.38.

Rossendale member Peter Agnew, of Rawtenstall, was lucky to only have to spend time in casualty department after his handlebar extension broke into two pieces during the event causing him to fall heavily.

THE Blackburn and District CTC racing squad enjoyed another successful evening on the track at Kirkby starting with a return for Chris Edmondson, who has recently moved from Hoddlesden to Nelson, winning his first event which was the eight lap B group prep race and followed it with another win in the eight lap points race.

In the A Group eight lap event Ian Yates, of Blackburn, was winner beating national hill climb champion Jim Henderson, of Southport, and experienced track rider Peter Boyd into second and third places.

In the final event of the youths omnium championship series Richard Hek, of Rishton, finished third to Liverpool Century's Rob Pugh in the pursuit which was the same position he had earlier claimed in the four-lap warm-up race.

The Bert Owens Memorial Handicap for juvenile boy and girl riders was a revelation for May Stott, of Clayton-le-Moors, who rode well in her heat to get to the final then took a well deserved third place in a rare appearance on the Kirkby track. Not to be outdone, father Tony Stott was later winner of the veterans race.

The A Group Devil Take the Hindmost was a whitewash for the Blackburn squad who claimed first three places with Ian Yates winner followed in by Carl Helliwell, of Great Harwood, and Paul Smith, of Langho.

Controversy reigned when the usual 16 lap Deeside Decider was extended to 21 laps to include the senior 10K Championship race and Carl Helliwell asked for a late entry to the title event and was refused.

The CTC Club have appealed as a precedence for late entries had already been established and in the race it was Ian Yates winner, Ian Stott second, Carl Helliwell third in the Deeside Decider and possibly also the championship dependent on appeal or otherwise Matt Sewell of Southport takes the championship bronze medal.

MANCHESTER University student Guy Laycock, who lives in Wiswell, pulled off possibly his best win to date when he was fastest in the Cleveleys Road Club 30-mile time trial over a windy two laps of a 15 mile circuit near Garstang on Saturday afternoon.

Twenty-one-year-old Guy clocked 1hr 13mins 22secs which was exceptional as times were up to five minutes slower than the previous year due to the tough conditions.

Second was West Pennine's John Bunting in 1:13.47 and third was Clayton Velo's Stuart Whitehead of Langho whose 1hr 14mins 01secs ride also led his club to first team award backed up by Peter Briscoe (1:19.24) and Martin Smithson (1:21.22).

In the midweek Horwich Cycling Club 20-mile time trial based on Belmont and Abbey Village, Dave Ebbrell, of Wilpshire and Blackburn and District CTC, claimed second place as he had done the previous year, with a time of 49mins 39secs against the winning time of 48mins 17secs of Craig Battersby, of Horwich, who rides in the Lancashire Road Club colours.

A TEAM of Blackburn and District CTC riders took part in the mountainous Tour of Snowdonia in North Wales on Sunday and after 90 tough miles, Carl Helliwell finished 14th in a field of well over 100 riders with Ian Stott 19th and Dave Ebbrell 26th.

First across the line with a brilliant win was 18-year-old James Davies of Hutton near Preston, a member of the Ribble Valley Cycle Racing Club.
