BURNLEY look set to start pre-season training next week with no new faces in their ranks.

But that doesn't worry skipper Steve Davis, who's backing boss Stan Ternent to again do the business in the transfer market.

The Clarets' only senior summer signing so far is Gareth Taylor, who had already become a key member of the Turf Moor set-up during his loan spell last season.

A record bid for QPR striker Peter Crouch was trumped by Portsmouth and Ternent's other moves are yet to bear fruit.

But the boss has irons in the fire with negotiations set to intensify next week.

And Davis insists there's no need to panic as Ternent looks to add the extra ingredients to sustain another top-six challenge.

The defender said: "I'm sure the manager has got it all under control. There's plenty of time.

"The supporters will be hoping that he's going to sign a few, as well as ourselves. But the manager will have all that sorted out."

Last summer Ternent bided his time and waited to get the men he wanted, not bringing in left-back Lee Briscoe until the start of pre-season training and then signing Kevin Ball from Fulham once the Clarets were in the Isle of Man near the end of July.

Both proved excellent signings and Davis believes more good players will be on their way, once they're available.

He added: "You can't sign people for the sake of it and if it's not right we're better starting off how we finished last season, rather than doing it for the sake of it and not bettering the squad.

"It's the manager's job and he's proved that he's been good at that."

Davis and the rest of the squad report back on Tuesday, although the likes of Briscoe, Glen Little, Paul Weller, Lennie Johnrose and Graham Branch have been at the training ground already in their quest for full fitness.

The Clarets face a month of hard work before starting out at Sheffield Wednesday, with Davis looking forward to the challenge.

"It's hard but no harder than last season. And it's just as tough for them as well. We didn't play to our capabilities at Hillsborough last season and we need to put that right," he said.

And the captain is eager to chase success on both league and cup fronts after being paired with Rushden and Diamonds in the first round of the Worthington Cup.

He added: "Rushden and Diamonds have done well in the FA Cup and it will be a difficult game. But being at home is a big advantage and we will approach it the same as the games against Sheffield Wednesday and Wimbledon.

"It will be no different from that point of view and we need to get a good run in the cup.

"It generates interest for the supporters and it can put the club on the map if we can get through to the later stages.

"We have never done anything in the League Cup in my time with Burnley. When I was at Luton we did well in it one year and it's great to progress and still be involved in the competition in January and Feburary."
