ANDY White will play in his 23rd consecutive Wilpshire Trophy tomorrow -- and hopes this will be the year he wins it for the first time.

The 37-year-old Pleasington player was just 16 when he first entered the event.

And now he has set his sights on breaking Tommy Martin's record of 40 in a row.

"I've done 23 and Ian Perkins has done 20 and we want to get Tommy's record," he said.

White came close to winning the Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit title last year when he hit a course record of 65 in the morning -- which still stands -- but threw it all away in the afternoon.

"I have come second, third, fourth, I have had the best morning score, the best afternoon score, but I have never won it," he said.

"Hopefully this is my year."

White hasn't enjoyed the best preparation for the Trophy, though, after being tied down by work commitments over the past month.

He has missed the last three Northern Order of Merit events, which has seen him drop down to fifth with 210 points to leader Alan Squires's 400, but he says that is not important.

"It is the prestige of playing in each event which is important and finishing in the top 12, because that is where you win points.

"The Wilpshire Trophy means a lot to me because I used to play there and my grandfather used to be captain at the club."

Also taking part in the event are Burnley pair Ben Scott and Michael Hunt, who won the Harold Ryden Trophy at the same course just weeks ago.

A total of 26 of the top amateurs from the North West will compete, all with a handicap of two or less.

Daniel Nutter, who won the Trafalgar Trophy on his home course of Nelson, will be hoping to continue his good form at Wilpshire, and club-mate Tony Flanagan, winner of the Revidge Cannon, will also be keen to build on his recent success.
