IN a high-scoring encounter at Burscough, Rainford went down in the final over as they tried to force the issue after posting a target of 246.

The innings was once again dominated by Andrew Robinson who cemented his status as the league's premier batsman with a masterly 142.

He was ably supported by Harrison (23) and Hilton (23) as the visitors, confident of the outcome, declared in 48 overs.

With a victory being the only means of getting any sort of title challenge going it was attack all the way. But the Burscough batting is made of stern stuff these days as the top order, led by Murray (95), steered the hosts to a six-wicket victory from the first ball of the final over.

There were grounds for celebration at the Jubilee Ground on Saturday as the 2nd XI scored their first victory of the campaign.

A superb bowling performance by 14-year-old Andrew Grounds, claiming 7-41, led the way backed up by fellow junior Mark Williams (2-18)as they dismissed Burscough for 115.

Old hands Maddison (31) and Whitehead (49) then took the home side to the brink of victory, before captain Williams steered them home to a four-wicket win.
