A COUPLE who were celebrating the start of their holidays ended up in cells, a court was told.

Glen Newton, 24, and Joanne Roberts, 20, had too much to drink, got involved in trouble and appeared before Burnley Magistrates -- two days before they were due to jet off to Greece.

Newton, of Amersham, Grove, Burnley, who made a racist comment and told police everybody had known the Duke of York pub was going to be damaged in the recent troubles, admitted threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, and was fined £100, with £30 costs.

Roberts, of Palace Street, Burnley, admitted breach of the peace and was bound over in the sum of £50, for 12 months.

Sentencing the duo, bench chairman Susan Hughes said Newton had disregarded police warnings. She added his comments about members of the immediate local community had been inappropriate, knowing what had happened in Burnley recently.

She added the defendant should have been more sensitive and not made them.

Andrew Church-Taylor, defending both, said the couple had finished work for the two week holidays and had gone out to celebrate. They were due to go to Greece on Sunday.

When they had left the pub there was no trouble but Newton later made comments about the Duke of York pub and began to question police officers about carrying out their duties.

The couple had been arrested and had been in custody and had been refused bail because they were going away on holiday.
