A TAKE-AWAY is likely to get the go-ahead at Market Street, Whitworth, despite protests from six residents and shopkeepers. The property, vacant for four years, was previously used for furniture sales.

In the same terrace there is an existing hot food take-away next-door, a church, an undertaker's and a barber's.

Six letters of objection have been received, citing late-night disturbance, eating in adjoining shop doorways and a lack of car parking as reasons for refusal.

The highways manager has not objected to the scheme, although the environmental health officer is concerned about odours and hours of operation. But the extraction system has since been amended.

Officers will tell Tuesday's engineering and planning sub-committee: "Given the urban location, and the designation of the locale as an employment area, where the needs of commerce are given precedence, the proposed use of the property would appear acceptable in broad land use terms."

They add that although the proposal could have a detrimental effect on the community, it would not be significant enough for refusal.

Members are recommended to consider the hours of operation and the environmental health officer is recommending the same hours as the adjacent take-away.
